Tirana, December 20, 2024 - Albania’s tourism industry is thriving, attracting nearly 2.9 million visitors between January and October, according to official data from INSTAT. Foreign tourists made up 67% of the total, with international arrivals in October alone rising by nearly 80% compared to last year.
Overnight stays also jumped to 6.8 million during this period, with foreign visitors staying nearly twice as long as locals.
Tourism Minister Mirela Kumbaro said the numbers show Albania’s growing appeal. “We are proud to see more people discovering our country’s natural beauty, history, and hospitality,” she said.
More than beaches
While Albania is well-known for its stunning beaches along the Adriatic and Ionian seas, more than half of tourists this year (54%) chose to visit inland regions. Places like Berat and Gjirokastër, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are becoming popular for their rich history and unique architecture.
The Central Region, which includes Tirana, remains the most visited area, attracting 45% of all tourists. “Tirana is so lively,” said Anna Müller, a German tourist. “There’s great food, friendly people, and a lot to see.”
Hotels and similar accommodations were the top choice for 94% of visitors, showing a clear preference for comfort and quality services.
Who’s visiting Albania?
Kosovo continues to bring the most visitors, making up 9.5% of international arrivals, followed by Italy (8.1%) and Germany (7.9%). Visitors from France and the UK also feature in the top five, with 4.2% and 3.6%, respectively.
Experts say Albania’s low costs, beautiful scenery, and growing reputation for safety and hospitality are attracting more international travelers. The country is becoming a serious competitor to its neighbors, like Montenegro and Greece, which have long been popular tourist spots.
