Tirana, January 4, 2025 – Albania has announced plans to restrict the use of cars by 2025 as part of its strategy to tackle climate change and reduce energy consumption. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy revealed the proposal in a new draft of its National Energy and Climate Plan, which is now open for public consultation.
The draft suggests that vehicles may only be used on certain days, based on license plate numbers. This approach, already used in many countries worldwide, aims to reduce air pollution and ease traffic congestion in urban areas.
The plan also includes measures such as introducing traffic taxes, promoting public transport, and improving road quality. Officials are hopeful these steps will help meet Albania’s environmental targets.
Another key proposal is to reduce traffic congestion by cutting the number of buses operating on the country’s national road network. The final plan will be shaped by public input before it is implemented later this year.
