TikTok to be banned in Albania for one year over safety concerns

Dec 21, 2024 - Albania has announced it will block access to TikTok for one year. This decision follows concerns about children's safety online, particularly around cyberbullying and inappropriate content.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared the news during a meeting with parents and teachers. He explained that after consulting with experts in education and child safety, the government decided to take action. "We have a clear plan with specific steps to create a safer and better education system," he said.

The new system will also allow parents to monitor their children's behavior in school. Under the plan, parents will be able to view live video feeds of their children’s classrooms, giving them more control over their children's safety at school.

The move comes as part of Albania’s broader effort to tackle issues linked to social media, with TikTok being criticized for its role in spreading harmful content. Rama emphasized that the platform would be blocked in Albania for one year. "TikTok will not be available in the Republic of Albania," he confirmed.

While some welcome the decision, others worry it could limit students' access to educational content. The government has said it will keep monitoring the situation and look for other ways to improve child safety online.
