Albania stands firm on TikTok ban, says PM Rama

December 30, 2024 — Prime Minister Edi Rama has ruled out any reconsideration of Albania’s decision to ban TikTok for a year, saying the government’s stance is “unshakable” despite potential pushback from the app’s parent company.

“We are not moving an inch from this decision,” Rama declared during a year-end press conference. “We need six to eight weeks to implement the ban due to its technical requirements, but this is a matter of principle. Strong action is non-negotiable.”

The ban follows a fatal stabbing last month of a 14-year-old boy, allegedly sparked by an online argument. Rama said the incident underlined the urgent need for stricter safeguards to protect children from harm linked to social media.

Without naming TikTok’s Chinese parent company, Rama acknowledged the app might explore ways to address the ban but dismissed any possibility of delaying action. “TikTok could well be working on measures, but we don’t have the luxury of waiting,” he said.

Albania’s move is part of a national programme to enhance child safety in schools and online. According to Rama, the decision has overwhelming public support, with over 90% of parents surveyed backing the measure.

The ban will rely on technical measures, such as blocking access through internet service providers, though details of enforcement have yet to be disclosed. Rama insisted the timeline is critical, calling the move “essential for the safety of our children.”

While several countries have imposed restrictions on the app for privacy concerns, Albania’s decision reflects a broader focus on its societal impact.

“This isn’t just about TikTok,” Rama said. “It’s about drawing a line when it comes to the safety of our children. We must act decisively and without delay.”
