Albania’s Ministry of Agriculture has reassured consumers that the country’s tangerines meet safety standards, following concerns over pesticide residues. The Ministry confirmed that the majority of the country’s tangerine production is safe for consumption and complies with both local and international regulations.
Dec 23, 2024 - Albania's Ministry of Agriculture has addressed concerns over pesticide residues in local tangerines, assuring consumers that the country's fruit is safe to eat. Following recent reports of pesticide violations, the Ministry confirmed that more than 85% of Albania's tangerine production meets both domestic and international safety standards.
The Ministry's statement stressed that tangerines undergo regular testing to ensure quality and safety. It urged both consumers and farmers to report any illegal practices, reinforcing Albania’s commitment to maintaining food safety and protecting its agricultural reputation.
Exports remain strong despite isolated issues
The Ministry highlighted that Albania exported 924 truckloads of tangerines this year, with shipments reaching European and global markets. Only a small number of exports were flagged for issues, with three shipments returned and destroyed due to pesticide concerns.
In response, Albania’s National Food Authority (AKU) has continued to monitor the situation, ensuring that all necessary actions are taken to uphold food safety standards. In one case, 20,482 kg of tangerines were destroyed after being flagged for pesticide residues, and the Ministry emphasized that this was an isolated incident.
Ongoing inspections and action
The Ministry has also worked closely with the National Veterinary and Phytosanitary Authority to carry out inspections, particularly in the southern village of Mursi, where contaminated tangerines were found. Legal actions, including fines and criminal charges, were implemented, and further inspections are underway in the Berat region to ensure compliance with agricultural standards.
The Ministry's Action Plan for Sustainable Pesticide Use, a national initiative that promotes safe farming practices, has been supported by various institutions, including the University of Tirana’s Agricultural Faculty.
Commitment to safe agriculture
In addition to addressing pesticide concerns, Albania has successfully managed threats from diseases like Sheep and Goat Plague and African Swine Fever, highlighting the country’s commitment to safeguarding agricultural health.
The Ministry encourages the use of environmentally friendly farming methods and continues to enforce strict bans on illegal pesticides. The public is urged to report any violations to the authorities to help protect the safety of Albanian food products.
