Albania defends TikTok ban as a move to safeguard children

Dec 22, 2024 - Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended Albania’s decision to ban TikTok for a year, stating it was a well-considered action made in consultation with parents across the country, not a reaction to a single incident.

“The ban on TikTok is not a rushed reaction but a carefully considered decision,” Rama said, emphasising that it reflects the concerns of over 90% of parents who demanded stricter measures to protect children.

TikTok’s demand for clarifications on the ban was dismissed by the Prime Minister. “In Albania, it is Albanians who make decisions, not TikTok’s algorithm,” he stated. While acknowledging that Albania is a small country, he urged the platform to prioritise the well-being of children worldwide, describing this as a moral responsibility.

The ban follows the tragic killing of a teenager, which TikTok representatives argue is unrelated to TikTok. However, Rama insisted the platform poses a broader threat to children through its algorithm, saying, “This is about addressing a significant danger to our youth.”

Rama reiterated Albania’s commitment to putting children’s well-being above all else. “Either TikTok protects the children of Albania, or Albania will protect its children from TikTok,” he concluded.
