January 14, 2025 — The murder of a 14-year-old by his peer in November 2024 has sparked an urgent response in Albania, as authorities tackle the rise of online violence among minors.
In 2024, over 2,000 cases of violence among minors were reported, with social media at the centre of the issue. The Ministry of Education revealed that the majority of this violence stems from digital platforms, leading to new government measures focused on digital security in schools and homes.
The government’s action plan includes plans for smart cameras in schools and public spaces to identify threats such as weapons, in collaboration with the UAE. Additionally, a pilot program will train students to recognise and report online aggression, and teachers will be equipped to manage digital bullying in classrooms.
The Center for Children’s Rights reported a worrying 400 cases of cyberbullying in 2024, three times the previous year. Altin Hazizaj, director of the centre, says a lack of parental control is fueling the problem. “The risk is online, and parents must be more aware,” he said, urging greater responsibility at home.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has proposed a temporary TikTok ban, citing concerns about violent content promoted by the platform. However, critics argue that banning one app won’t address the broader issue of online violence, with platforms like Instagram and Snapchat also posing risks.
