TIRANA, Jan. 21, 2025 - Fourteen years have passed since the deadly protest on Tirana’s "Dëshmorët e Kombit" boulevard, where four citizens were fatally shot during a rally against the government.
The 2011 protest, organized by the opposition Socialist Party, unfolded as the Democratic Party (DP) and the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) governed the country, with Sali Berisha as Prime Minister and Lulzim Basha serving as Interior Minister.
The protest turned violent, leaving Ziver Veizi, Aleks Nika, Hekuran Deda, and Faik Myrtaj dead—three shot within ten minutes and the fourth succumbing to injuries days later. Their families continue to demand justice.
The demonstration followed the airing of a damning video on investigative show Fiks Fare. The footage showed then-Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Meta allegedly striking corrupt deals with the late Dritan Prifti, a former minister, using a black notebook to outline their plans.
The tragedy remains a dark chapter in Albania’s history, with accountability still unresolved.
