Albania's foreign minister, Olta Xhacka met today with her Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias in Brussels. In a message posted on social media, the Albanian chief diplomat said the meeting between the two counterparts focused on the arrest of the newly-elected ethnic Greek mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
"The meeting with my colleague and good friend, foreign minister Nikos Dendias in Brussels was a good opportunity to discuss in a frank manner Mr. Beleri's case. I made it clear that this is a judicial matter that should not affect the new page we have opened in our bilateral relation," Xhacka wrote on her message.
According to her, "this is neither an HR issue, nor a political one, let alone a bilateral issue."
" Mr. Beleri enjoys the same rights as any other Albanian citizen & as every Albanian citizen he is not above the law. Vote-buying is a grave offense in our legislation&his case is now in court to be judged," she said
The Albanian FM said "the only thing we all can do is to patiently wait for the process to run its course and not prejudge or second guess the proceeding."
