Jan 6, 2025 - Albania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has formally begun preparations for the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 11, 2025. The process started with the publication of the first extract of the voter list, fully complying with legal requirements and the Electoral Code.
Minister of Internal Affairs Ervin Hoxha confirmed that 3.7 million people are eligible to vote, with 50.5% of voters being male and 49.5% female. He also noted that there are 4,536 citizens aged over 100, who will be included in the list if they reach that age by May 2025. These citizens must visit Civil Status offices to ensure they are added.
Hoxha said the total number of voting centres within legal limits currently stands at 5,050. Mayors have been asked to make decisions regarding voting centres outside these limits, particularly those with more than 1,000 voters or fewer than 300.
In a significant change, the voter lists will now include two categories: those living in Albania and those abroad. The preliminary list will be published on March 9, 2025, and citizens will have 48 hours to choose whether to vote in Albania or abroad.
Starting January 11, 2025, Albanian citizens living abroad can register to vote via an electronic platform. To register, they will need to upload a photograph and identification documents. Hoxha encouraged citizens to renew their identification documents before the registration process begins.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with other relevant institutions, has promised to ensure that the election process will be fair, transparent, and accessible to all citizens.
