US envoy urges clear opposition leadership for Albania's anti-corruption

May 20, 2024 - In an interview on the Balkan Debrief show, Gabriel Escobar, wrapping up his role as Deputy Assistant Secretary and US envoy for Western Balkans, highlighted Albania's persistent struggle with corruption. Escobar stressed the urgent need for political parties to keep each other in check to combat this issue effectively.

He emphasized that the opposition must provide clear and decisive leadership, cautioning against selecting leaders who evoke memories of Albania's turbulent past in the 1990s.

Escobar said: "We need an opposition that can hold the government accountable and offer citizens a range of options to tackle the challenges on Albania's path to European integration."

He stressed the necessity for the opposition to articulate its stance and leadership unequivocally. Escobar expressed his hope that the chosen leaders would not remind the country of its darker days in the '90s.

In conclusion, Escobar urged the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, to navigate its path with prudence, ensuring a brighter future for Albania.
