The US Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, Alexander Kasanof, has called on Albania to maintain momentum in its fight against corruption, stressing that no one is above the law.
During his visit to Tirana, Kasanof praised judicial reforms but said more work is needed to address systemic issues. He described Albania’s progress towards EU membership as “noteworthy” and commended efforts to strengthen the justice system.
“The United States supports Albania’s journey towards a fairer society,” he told Voice of America. “SPAK must follow the evidence wherever it leads, ensuring justice for all.”
Long road to reform
Albania began its justice reforms eight years ago, with the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) leading investigations into organised crime and high-level corruption. While progress has been made, Kasanof said ongoing support is crucial to ensure lasting change.
“Judicial reform is not easy, but it is necessary,” he said. “Albania’s success matters not just for its own future but for stability across the region.”
Elections and regional concerns
Kasanof also addressed US concerns about next year’s general elections, urging free and fair polls. He called for candidates untainted by corruption or ties to organised crime, describing this as key to public trust in the democratic process.
His visit comes amid growing international focus on the Western Balkans. Kasanof condemned a recent attack on infrastructure in northern Kosovo, labelling it “deliberate destabilisation” and urging a full investigation.
“Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia remains essential,” he said. “The United States stands ready to support any steps towards lasting peace.”
