US diplomat Richard Verma begins Western Balkans tour to boost ties

TIRANA, Jan 8, 2025  – Richard R. Verma, a senior U.S. diplomat, is visiting Albania, Kosovo, and Serbia this week as part of efforts to deepen partnerships and support stability across the Western Balkans.

In Tirana, Verma will meet officials to talk about Albania’s democratic progress, military cooperation, and stronger economic links with the U.S. He’s also expected to thank the government for helping Afghan refugees find safety in the country.

While in Kosovo, Verma will focus on easing tensions with Serbia through EU-led talks, strengthening governance, and improving energy security. He’ll also recognize Kosovo’s support for Ukraine and its efforts to assist Afghans in need.

In Belgrade, Verma will discuss expanding U.S.-Serbia cooperation, particularly in energy and trade, while backing Serbia’s push for closer ties with Europe. Talks will also cover military collaboration and resolving disputes with Kosovo.

The visit signals Washington’s ongoing commitment to the Western Balkans as the region works toward deeper ties with the EU and NATO.
