Tirana mayors questioned by prosecutors

Tirana, December 26, 2024 - The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, appeared before Albania’s Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) on Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation into his finances.

The inquiry comes after SPAK conducted searches at Veliaj’s residence and his wife’s art gallery earlier this week. The prosecution office confirmed the actions were related to an ongoing criminal case but did not provide further details.

In a statement, Veliaj said he welcomed the investigation and was cooperating fully with authorities. “Transparency is key, and I remain committed to assisting the process,” he said.

Broader anti-corruption efforts

SPAK has been leading Albania’s efforts to combat corruption and organised crime, a crucial element of the country’s bid for European Union membership. The inquiry into Veliaj is part of its mandate to investigate public officials.

Veliaj, who has served as Tirana’s mayor since 2015, is a prominent member of the ruling Socialist Party. He has been instrumental in major urban development projects aimed at modernising the capital.
