May 14, 2024 — One faction of the Democratic Party, led by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, currently under house arrest and facing corruption charges, organized another protest today outside Tirana's municipality, demanding the resignation of Mayor Erion Veliaj.
The protest turned tense from the outset, with some demonstrators resorting to violence, including throwing Molotov cocktails. Among the protesters was Argita Malltezi, daughter of the former PM, whose husband is also under house arrest. The protest followed a familiar pattern: speeches denouncing the justice system, attempts to breach police lines, and eventual dispersal with plans for future demonstrations.
Many wore "Free the opposition leader" shirts in support of Berisha, but participation this Tuesday was notably lower than before.
