Opposition leader predicts defeat, says he won’t accept the result before

Tirana,  December 20, 2024 – Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has once again called for a caretaker government to oversee Albania’s May 2024 elections, questioning the ability of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government to hold fair elections.

Appearing on Debate on A2CNN, Berisha stated that the opposition wants elections quickly, but under a neutral government. He repeated his belief that the upcoming elections would be “a charade” and described international resolutions against the government as proof of the government’s shortcomings.

“We want elections as soon as possible, but not under this government,” Berisha said. “These elections are nothing but a charade. The international resolutions condemning Rama’s government show the truth behind them.”

Despite his claims of electoral fraud, Berisha has not provided evidence to support the allegations. His comments continue to raise questions about whether his objections are more about preparing an explanation for a potential defeat rather than genuine concerns over the electoral process.

The opposition has maintained its call for a caretaker government to oversee the elections, arguing that this is necessary to ensure fairness. However, Berisha’s criticism appears to be more about framing the election process ahead of time, suggesting a narrative for rejecting the results if the opposition loses.
