Former Albanian president Ilir Meta questioned over US lobbying case

Ex-president Ilir Meta faces questioning in Albania’s anti-corruption probe, as investigators examine lobbying activities in the United States.

Jan 7, 2025 - Albania’s former president and opposition leader, Ilir Meta, has been questioned by prosecutors at the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) as part of an investigation into alleged lobbying activities in the United States.

Meta’s lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, spoke to reporters after the session, confirming his client had cooperated fully. “The session was focused exclusively on lobbying, and Mr. Meta provided all the information he could recall without referencing documents we are yet to receive,” Gjokutaj said.

The former president's lawyer said the meeting began with Meta asking for updates on separate cases involving alleged corruption, including the controversial McGonigal affair and incinerator contracts. Prosecutors advised Meta to submit formal requests to SPAK for further details.

While Meta reportedly intended to address the media himself, his request was denied by SPAK officials. Instead, Gjokutaj relayed his client’s stance, emphasizing that Meta has been actively cooperating in all stages of the investigation. “He has not chosen silence or avoidance; he is fully engaged in clarifying every matter raised,” Gjokutaj added.

SPAK, established in 2019 as part of Albania’s judicial reforms, is tasked with handling corruption and organized crime cases involving senior officials. Its investigations have often sparked controversy, particularly when targeting high-ranking political figures.
