Euroatlantic democrats vow fresh alternative for voters

TIRANA, Jan. 23 – The Democratic Euroatlantic Alliance has pledged to offer Albanians a fresh political alternative, "breaking free from the long-standing rivalry between Edi Rama and Sali Berisha".

Addressing reporters, the Alliance's spokesperson dismissed speculation about registering a new party, citing the National Council's decision and Lulzim Basha's commitment to justice within the Democratic Party.

"The fight for the Democratic Party will continue until justice prevails. This party cannot be anyone's private property," the spokesperson declared.

The Alliance plans to enter elections in a coalition, offering what they described as a "citizen-focused alternative."

"Albanians won’t be hostage to a no-choice system between Rama and Berisha. We’re committed to working for their interests, not for seats of power," they told rde.al.

The Democratic Euroatlantic Alliance emerged from a deep rift within Albania’s Democratic Party (DP), driven by a long-standing conflict between former leaders Lulzim Basha and Sali Berisha.

Basha, who led the DP from 2013 to 2022, promoted a pro-European and reformist agenda but faced criticism after repeated electoral defeats. The turning point came in 2021 when Basha expelled Berisha from the party’s parliamentary group following U.S. sanctions against the former prime minister over alleged corruption.

Berisha rejected the accusations and mobilized his supporters, eventually reclaiming control of the DP. This split the party, with Basha and his allies forming the Euroatlantic Alliance as a platform for their pro-Western vision.

The conflict has left the DP weakened, with the Alliance positioning itself as a fresh alternative for voters ahead of upcoming elections.
