Brussels, Dec 18, 2024 – European Union leaders are meeting tonight with their Western Balkan counterparts to discuss enlargement and an economic growth plan for the region, which seeks closer ties and eventual membership in the bloc.
The summit focuses on the European prospects of six aspiring members: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo. Leaders are expected to endorse a commitment to prioritizing enlargement and accelerating the process, a message included in the draft of a joint declaration.
"Enlargement is a geostrategic investment in peace, stability, and prosperity. With new momentum in the process, accelerating it based on fair and strict conditions and individual merit is in our shared interest," the draft reads.
Mixed progress among candidates
Montenegro is regarded as the most advanced candidate, having opened all chapters in its accession talks. Albania and North Macedonia began negotiations last year, while Bosnia holds candidate status but has yet to start talks. Kosovo, currently a potential candidate, is still laying the groundwork for future steps.
The EU's renewed focus on enlargement comes amid heightened global geopolitical tensions, with leaders keen to reinforce stability in the region. The Western Balkans remain a strategic interest for the EU, as member states aim to secure economic and political ties.
Thursday will also see the EU’s regular end-of-year summit, where broader issues, including migration and security, are set to dominate discussions.
