Jan 23, 2025 - Ilir Beqaj, the former Minister of Health in Albania, is facing serious legal troubles as his trial over a controversial sterilization concession moves forward. Alongside him are former Deputy Minister Klodian Rjepaj and businessman Ilir Rrapaj, all accused of theft and abuse of office related to a €100 million contract.
In a tense court session, Beqaj’s request to dismiss Judge Flojera Davidhi was denied. He argued that her refusal to explain the charges against him jeopardized his right to a fair trial. "You have undermined the process and left us without a proper defense," Beqaj said, claiming that the allegations are politically motivated and lack real evidence.
The prosecution alleges that Beqaj approved contracts that violated legal standards, benefiting Rrapaj significantly. The judge’s decision to escalate the charges signals a serious commitment to tackling corruption in Albania.
Despite the mounting pressure, Beqaj insists he is innocent and vows to fight the charges. He criticized the prosecution for not verifying their claims about surgical intervention numbers, which he believes are exaggerated.
