Biden’s nominee for ambassador to Albania faces delay as Senate returns

January 5, 2025 – David Kostelancik, nominated by President Joe Biden to be the U.S. Ambassador to Albania, is facing a delay after the Senate returned his nomination. The Senate has not yet confirmed or rejected the nomination, meaning it must be reconsidered by President Biden.

Kostelancik was put forward by Biden in January 2023 to replace Yuri Kim, following her departure from the post. However, with the Senate’s delay, the nomination is still in question. President Biden now has until January 20 to either renominate Kostelancik or choose another candidate.

This comes as the U.S. prepares for the swearing-in of President Donald Trump, who could have an impact on future diplomatic appointments, including the position of ambassador to Albania.

In the meantime, the U.S. Embassy in Albania remains under the leadership of Nancy VanHorn, the Chargé d'Affaires.
