Jan 5, 2025 - Sali Berisha, Albania’s former Prime Minister, will appear at the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) on Monday, January 6. This marks his third visit in connection with the investigation into the privatization of the Partizani sports club, a case that has sparked widespread allegations of corruption.
This time, however, Berisha’s appearance is not for questioning. Instead, he is following a court order that requires him to report to judicial authorities twice a month. The measure, imposed on January 3 by the Special Appeals Court, was signed by Judge Engert Pëllumbi.
The investigation centres around accusations of corruption related to the privatization of the Partizani sports complex. Berisha, along with his son-in-law Jamarbër Malltezi, who also faces money laundering charges, is under investigation. The case also involves builder Fatmir Bektashi, who worked on constructing 17 towers at the site, and notary Andia Pustina.
As Berisha heads to SPAK, his supporters are planning protests outside the prosecutor’s office, claiming the investigation is politically motivated. Tensions are rising as Berisha faces growing opposition from the ruling party.
A crucial decision is expected soon on whether the Partizani case will go to trial. Judge Flojera Davidhi, who previously ordered Berisha’s release from house arrest, will make the final decision.
