Berisha returns to lead protest as the Albanian capital braces for traffic chaos

Tirana, December 23, 2024 – Supporters of the Democratic Party and other opposition groups are expected to participate in an anti-government protest in the Albanian capital this evening.

The demonstration, which begins at 5:00 PM, will see protesters block key roads in the city for three hours, potentially causing significant traffic disruptions. The protest coincides with the holiday season, when traffic in Tirana is typically higher due to returning emigrants and festive travel.

Opposition leader Sali Berisha will lead the protest, marking his return to street demonstrations after more than a year. Berisha had been absent due to an arrest warrant related to the “Partizani” case. He has urged citizens to join in what he has called Albania’s largest act of civil disobedience and hinted that there will be surprises during the protest.

Organizers had previously requested permission from the State Police for the demonstration, but their request to block key routes was denied. Despite this, plans for the protest remain in place, and authorities are preparing for the expected disruption.
