Berisha reports to prosecutors, accuses Dumani of closing criminal cases

Tirana,  January 6, 2025 – Sali Berisha, the leader of Albania’s Democratic Party, appeared before the Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAK) today as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption. This comes after a court decision requiring him to report to SPAK twice a month.

Outside SPAK’s offices, Berisha’s supporters gathered to protest the legal measures against him, making it clear they weren’t happy with the investigation.

During his appearance, Berisha didn’t hold back, accusing SPAK’s chief, Altin Dumani, of mishandling cases of electoral crimes. He claimed Dumani had closed crucial investigations and was working with criminal groups to cover them up. In his words, Dumani was the “chief electoral criminal.”

Berisha also took aim at several government ministers, accusing them of influencing the justice system and working with criminal gangs to manipulate the election process. He specifically mentioned Taulant Balla, a prominent figure in the ruling government, suggesting his involvement in illegal activities to control the political landscape.

The investigation surrounding Berisha also ties into his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi. Malltezi is under suspicion for benefiting from a controversial government decision regarding a building project, allegedly earning 5.4 million euros through improper means.
