Berisha dismisses US anti-corruption warning, risking political fallout

Dec 19, 2024 - Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, has dismissed U.S. warnings about engaging with individuals accused of corruption, including himself. The former prime minister, who has been designated ‘non grata’ by both the U.S. and the U.K., called the remarks outdated and irrelevant.

“This administration is finished. I’m not here to waste time on the past—ask me about the future,” Berisha said, referring to recent comments by Nancy VanHorn, a senior U.S. Embassy official in Tirana. He also suggested the statement was influenced by U.S. Ambassador Yuri Kim, whom he has criticized in the past.

US stance on anti-corruption

The U.S. Embassy in Tirana reiterated its firm position on corruption, with VanHorn stating: “We do not engage with individuals designated for significant corruption.” She also urged Albanian political leaders to create a fair environment for upcoming elections.

Rising challenges for Berisha

Berisha’s remarks follow a decision by the U.K. government to reject his appeal against its ‘non grata’ designation. While he insists the accusations are politically motivated, critics argue his defiance risks alienating voters who value Albania’s Western alliances.

“For Albania, cooperation with the U.S. is essential for reforms and EU integration. Berisha’s stance might hurt not just his image but also his party’s,” a political analyst in Tirana noted.
