Basha challenges Berisha's grip on Albanian opposition

Tirana, June 19, 2024 — Democratic Party leader Lulzim Basha has responded to accusations made against him by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha following the UK Special Immigration Appeals Commission's affirmation of the Home Office's ban on Berisha from entering the UK.

In a televised interview, Basha asserted that neither the US, where Berisha faces similar restrictions, nor the UK can be swayed. He criticized Berisha for recycling accusations often leveled by Prime Minister Edi Rama against him. Basha accused Berisha of holding the opposition hostage to serve his personal interests, emphasizing the need for a genuine alternative for the country, stating confidently, "There's no force in the world that can thwart our alternative."

Recently, a Tirana court ruled in favor of recognizing Sali Berisha as the official leader of Albania's main opposition party after a two-year legal battle with Lulzim Basha over party leadership. Basha intends to contest this decision while hinting at the potential formation of a new political movement.

Meanwhile, Sali Berisha, currently under house arrest and facing corruption charges in Albania, remains under similar restrictions in the US and UK.
