Albanian political leaders offer condolences over losses in Turkey's earthquake

Albanian political leaders have reacted following the news of the deathly earthquake that struck Turkey this morning. In a message posted on social media, president Bajram Begaj has expressed his support for the Turkish people.

"Deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria this morning. I and Albanians stand with the affected people and their families, who lost their loved ones in this terrible tragedy, offering our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers," the head of the state said in his message.

PM Edi Rama said a rescue mission will depart today for Turkey.

"Deeply saddened about this morning news on the devastating earthquake hitting parts of Türkiye and Syria. Our deepest condolences to the many families that lost lives and wishing a fast recovery of the injured. A rescue mission of solidarity will depart today for Türkiye," Rama said.

Meanwhile, foreign minister Olta Xhacka has offered Albania's assistance for Turkey.

"Our hearts and our prayers go to the victims of the tragic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria today causing hundreds of victims. In this difficult hour, we are ready to assist Turkey in any way we can," the Albanian chief diplomat wrote in her message.

Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj has also expressed his condolences for the families of the victims.

"Tirana is waking up to the devastating news of the Turkey earthquake! Our hearts and minds go to all the affected and the families that have lost loved ones! With the memories still fresh from our November 26 tragedy, but also the warmth of solidarity between our two people," Tirana mayor said.

Leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta also posted a message on social media saying that:

"In these difficult moments of dealing with the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last night, our prayers go out to the many victims who tragically lost their lives, hoping for as few human casualties as possible and a fast recovery of the injured."
