TIRANA, Jan 8, 2025 - Albania has been chosen to partner with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government development agency dedicated to reducing poverty and boosting economic growth.
The U.S. Embassy announced the decision, citing Albania's democratic progress, institutional efforts to fight corruption, and support for the rule of law. The partnership will also address ongoing developmental challenges.
MCC and Albania's government will work closely with local organizations and communities to identify key barriers to economic growth. This analysis will help design a targeted program, but the final scope depends on further research, available funding, and MCC board approval.
“This data-driven approach ensures a meaningful program that supports Albania’s growth goals,” the U.S. Embassy stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration throughout the process.
While the partnership is a positive step, it does not guarantee Albania will receive full funding. The MCC will require evidence of successful planning and a continued commitment to meeting strict eligibility standards.
The MCC recently expanded its reach, adding 33 countries to its candidate pool following bipartisan legislation. The agency uses a competitive selection process and a detailed scorecard to encourage reforms in governance and economic policies, often driving improvements even before programs are funded—a phenomenon known as the “MCC Effect.”
Countries worldwide rely on the MCC scorecard as a guide to improve policies and attract investment for long-term development.
