Albania on track for more EU negotiation chapters by 2025

December 2, 2024 - Albania is preparing to open more chapters in its European Union negotiations, with 2025 set as a target for further progress. Majlinda Dhuka, Albania’s chief EU negotiator, said the country has completed all technical preparations needed to advance.

“We are ready to open new chapters, following the successful start with ‘Fundamentals’ last December,” Dhuka said during a European Affairs Committee hearing. The EU and member states have supported Albania's move forward, she added.

However, opposition leader Jorida Tabaku criticized the government for a lack of transparency in the process. “The integration process shouldn’t rely solely on Albania’s geostrategic position,” she said. “Businesses and citizens need to be involved.”

Dhuka responded, explaining that some negotiations must remain confidential. She also pointed to Albania’s careful study of other nations’ EU accession paths as a guide.

The next phase of talks is key to Albania's future EU relationship, with eyes on the chapters expected to open in 2025.
