UEFA considers punishments for nationalist chants in Euro 2024 clash

June 21, 2024 — UEFA is expected to impose punishments on the Albanian and Croatian football associations for nationalist chants by their fans during the recent Euro 2024 match between the two teams. The chants, which targeted Serbs, have sparked outrage and calls for severe action from the Serbian Football Association (FSS).The match, which ended 2-2, was marred by the offensive chants from fans of both teams.

The FSS has formally requested UEFA to sanction the two federations, even if it means Serbia forfeiting their participation in the tournament. UEFA has already fined both the Albanian and Serbian FAs 10,000 euros each for nationalist displays by their fans in earlier matches.

The Albanian FA was also fined a total of 37,375 euros for various fan misconduct in their match against Italy. The severity of the punishments for the Albania-Croatia match is expected to be announced by the end of this week, according to Serbian media reports.

The animosity between Croatian, Albanian, and Serbian fans stems from the conflicts in the Balkans during the 1990s. Nationalist chants and displays are not uncommon at matches involving these national teams.
