US ambassador Jeff Hovenier bids farewell to Kosovo after three years of service

December 27, 2024 – After three years of service, US Ambassador Jeff Hovenier has wrapped up his mission in Kosovo, leaving behind a legacy of strengthened ties between the two nations.

In his final official act, Ambassador Hovenier, alongside Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, laid a wreath at the statue of Ibrahim Rugova, Kosovo's first president. The ceremony, held in the heart of Pristina, was a tribute to Rugova’s role in the country’s independence and its ongoing pursuit of democracy.

Hovenier reflected on the progress Kosovo has made since he arrived in 2021, emphasising his commitment to supporting the country's sovereignty and stability. “The United States is committed to our partnership,” Hovenier said. “We want to see Kosovo succeed.”

He praised Kosovo’s remarkable transformation over the past decades, from the turbulent 1990s to its independence, calling the progress "a testament to the resilience of the people of Kosovo."

In a tribute to Rugova, Hovenier acknowledged the former president’s dedication to human rights and the creation of a multi-ethnic, democratic state. “His insistence on achieving these goals in line with the highest international values has shaped Kosovo’s path forward,” Hovenier added.

President Osmani expressed her gratitude to Hovenier for his contributions to Kosovo's development, particularly in protecting its sovereignty. She emphasised the importance of maintaining strong international alliances, calling them vital to Kosovo’s future. "When you have friendships based on values, both the people and the state of Kosovo move forward," she said.

As Hovenier departs, Kosovo remains focused on regional challenges, including tensions in the north. President Osmani has consistently stressed the need for continued support from international partners to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
