Greece slams Mickoski over “Macedonian question” comments

ATHENS, Jan 23, 2025 – Greece has strongly criticised North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristian Mickoski for remarks made during his visit to the United States, where he claimed the “Macedonian question” remains unresolved.

“The issue of North Macedonia’s name is settled definitively and irreversibly,” Greece’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement, just hours after Mickoski addressed North Macedonian emigrants in New Jersey.

Mickoski stated his government has made efforts to improve the country’s economy but insisted more action is needed internationally. “The ‘Macedonian question’ has existed for centuries and is still unresolved,” he said, urging support from capitals like Washington, Brussels, and Berlin.

Greece has called his comments a challenge to the Prespa Agreement, the 2018 deal that resolved the name dispute between the two countries. “This is an attempt to reopen a closed issue,” the ministry stated. It warned that progress in bilateral relations and North Macedonia’s EU membership path requires full respect for the agreement and an end to such claims.

The controversy risks straining relations as Greece pushes for the preservation of the Prespa deal.
