EULEX increases security in Kosovo ahead of crucial elections

Pristina, January 14, 2025 — With Kosovo’s parliamentary elections approaching, the European Union is stepping up security across the country. EULEX, the EU’s rule-of-law mission, has sent additional police officers from France, Italy, Lithuania, and Portugal to support local forces.

These officers will work alongside the Polish-led Specialized Police Unit (SPU) to help maintain order and ensure the safety of all communities as the February 9 election date draws near.

The increased security comes as tensions remain high in Kosovo’s northern region, home to a Serb-majority population. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has emphasized the need to avoid any unrest during the election period. NATO is monitoring the situation closely, with officials from Pristina and Belgrade working to ensure stability.

This is the fifth deployment of EULEX’s reserve unit since March 2022. The mission, which works in close cooperation with NATO’s KFOR forces, serves as a key component of Kosovo’s security framework.

Kosovo’s northern areas have experienced growing political and ethnic tensions in recent years. As the country prepares for elections, EULEX’s expanded presence aims to prevent violence and ensure the smooth conduct of the vote.
