Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen chosen as EU envoy for Kosovo-Serbia talks

January 19, 2025 — The European Union has chosen Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen to lead talks between Kosovo and Serbia, a move aimed at reviving stalled negotiations.

Sorensen will replace Slovakia’s Miroslav Lajčák, whose term ends on January 31. The appointment, proposed by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, is expected to be confirmed by member states by the end of the month.

The EU has been mediating dialogue between the two Balkan neighbours since 2011, aiming to resolve disputes and normalize relations. However, while agreements have been reached over the years, implementation has been limited, leaving tensions high.

A familiar face in the Balkans

Sorensen brings decades of diplomatic experience in the region. He has previously served as the EU’s envoy to Bosnia and Herzegovina, led EU delegations in North Macedonia and Serbia, and worked with the UN Mission in Kosovo.

EU sources say his deep knowledge of the Balkans played a key role in his selection. Sorensen will focus solely on the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, unlike his predecessor, who also oversaw other regional issues.

High stakes for the EU

The EU has warned both Kosovo and Serbia that delays in implementing a normalization agreement could harm their bids to join the bloc. The talks have made little progress in recent years, and Brussels is under pressure to prove it can broker lasting peace in the region.

Sorensen is expected to begin his mandate in February, tasked with navigating one of the EU’s most challenging diplomatic missions.
