Jan 9, 2025 – President Joe Biden has introduced tougher sanctions targeting people and organizations accused of stirring trouble in the Western Balkans, in a bid to protect peace and stability in the region.
Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday that expands sanctions first introduced in 2021. The updated measures freeze assets in the U.S. and ban travel for anyone seen as a threat to regional security or peace agreements.
Who’s affected?
The new rules go further than before, with the U.S. Treasury Department taking the lead in enforcing them. Now, anyone who supports sanctioned individuals – whether financially, materially, or through technology – could also face consequences. Even family members, including spouses and adult children, are now within the scope of these measures.
The White House says this action is aimed at countering ongoing efforts to undermine the sovereignty and borders of Balkan states.
Why the focus on the Balkans?
The Western Balkans – which includes countries like Bosnia, Kosovo, and Serbia – remains a fragile region. Decades after the wars of the 1990s, ethnic tensions, political rivalries, and external influences still make peacebuilding a challenge.
Washington’s latest move sends a clear message that those fueling instability will face consequences, as the U.S. doubles down on its commitment to maintaining order in the region.
