Dec 26, 2024 - The Balkans are currently battling severe snowstorms that have caused widespread disruption across the region. Countries including Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, and Serbia are facing significant challenges as heavy snowfall continues to affect daily life, leaving thousands without power and isolating entire communities.
Bosnia has been hit hardest, particularly in its northwestern and western regions. Authorities report that over 200,000 homes have been left without electricity, with some areas also losing access to heating and water. Many towns, including Drvar and Bosanski Petrovac, are completely cut off, with snowdrifts of over 80cm blocking roads and making travel impossible.
In response to the ongoing crisis, local authorities have declared a state of emergency in several regions. Efforts to clear blocked roads and restore power have been complicated by the continuing snowfall, which has also disrupted emergency services.
Croatia is facing similar difficulties, with snow and strong winds creating dangerous conditions in areas like Gorski Kotar, Lika, and Slavonia. Authorities have imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles in an attempt to limit the damage and ensure safety on the roads.
Many businesses, schools, and public buildings have been forced to close, and in some areas, vehicles have been stranded for more than 12 hours. With the storm showing no sign of easing, local governments are urging residents to stay off the roads and remain indoors where possible.
