The despair that is causing resignation among opposition members

The renunciation of political mandates by two consecutive Democrat MPs with the motivation that they are going to “pursue personal matters,” is clear evidence of the lack of hope amidst Berisha’s movement in that party. However, it is neither the party’s fractioning nor debates that cause despair. The only thing that despairs many Democrats, including those who pretend to support Sali Berisha, is the conviction that he would never resign from his fraction of the party, even if he is abandoned by everyone. This makes all Democrats feel hopeless regarding their political future.

Both MPs who recently renounced their political mandates have struggled for a long time under Berisha’s pressure to force them on his side. Therefore, the only alternative that they were left with was to renounce their mandates and focus on their personal lives.

Sali Berisha dragged them in his battle against the United States by promising them inner democracy in the party, even though he ended up selecting only a close circle of mediocre loyalists. He dragged them in a battle with the US, while claiming that he was fighting against Lulzim Basha. However, even after the latter’s resignation, Berisha continued his struggle to take over the party’s headquarters and its symbols.

In other words, Berisha proved it himself that his real battle was against the US and not against Basha’s leadership. Those who hoped that he would resign after removing Basha, have found themselves in the nasty trap of an old man, who is happy to have incriminated them in his battle against the US. Berisha dragged them in a battle against the US by promising that the Democratic Party would rise again, while its inner democracy would strengthen even more. However, his fraction remains now a mindless crowd, commandeered through Berisha’s Facebook profile and not the party’s statute.

The Primaries have been postponed several times already because they cannot gather enough people, even though they have speculatively increased the number of voters by including also party’s supporters. The most concrete example of what hope can Berisha’s movement inspire are Grida Duma and Alfred Rusha. Two prominent members of the Democratic Party prior to Berisha’s movement, who would now rather prefer to renounce their political mandates.

Now there is room for humour as well as tragedy in the current situation, but not regarding Duma’s and Rusha’s future. It is much better for them to focus on other things, outside of Democratic Party. The tragedy consists on what Berisha is doing to the opposition by encouraging resignation prior to elections as well as causing despair to those few, who could inspire Democrats to some degree. After his year-long battle, this is perhaps the worst result that Berisha has achieved in the Democratic Party. But, it is not too bad. He is at least in a better position than Edi Rama in this battle.
