Operator sought for Tirana airport rail link

The government has opened the search for a company to run passenger trains on the planned Durrës-Tirana-airport rail link.

The route would connect the port city of Durrës, the capital Tirana and Tirana International Airport.

The Infrastructure Ministry and Albanian Railways have invited companies to express interest by 26 July.

The tender is expected in late 2026, with passenger services planned to start in late 2027.

The operator will also have to provide the trains, which may be new, used or leased.

The first stage foresees 44 daily services between Tirana and Durrës and 74 between Tirana and the airport on working days.

The contract is expected to last 10 to 15 years.
