Greece joins green hydrogen corridor project linking southern Europe to Germany

Nov 11, 2024 - Greece has joined a major green hydrogen corridor project to boost energy security and reduce carbon emissions across Europe. The initiative, in collaboration with Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic, aims to connect southern Europe with Germany. This will facilitate the transport and use of green hydrogen.

The project is part of the European Union’s strategy to transition to renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. It is expected to address Germany’s growing hydrogen needs, projected at 130 TWh annually by 2030, with 100 TWh to be imported.

Although the full corridor is not officially part of the EU’s projects of common interest, two key components are: the DESFA hydrogen pipeline in Greece and the Hydrogen Transmission System in Bulgaria. Greece is expected to play a crucial role in the project due to its renewable energy potential, especially in solar and wind power, which are vital for green hydrogen production.

The corridor promises to boost energy security by diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on traditional fuels. It is also expected to contribute to the EU’s climate goals by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The project will stimulate economic growth across participating countries, creating new jobs and fostering deeper cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
