(SeeNews) - Albania’s port authority, DPA, will provide an additional crane and three vehicles to the commercial port in Durres in a bid to facilitate container movement and ease congestion, it said on Friday.

“We are in the high season of port activity and in the first four months of this year we have seen a significant increase in commercial volumes processed in the Port of Durres,” DPA told SeeNews via email, adding that the volume of cargo handled at the port exceeds the record-high levels of 2021.

In the first four months of the year, 48,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) were processed, as opposed to 45,000 TEU in the same period in 2021, according to DPA data. In April alone, outbound cargo amounted to 7,007 tonnes, as opposed to 6,200 tonnes in the same month last year.

Shipping companies told local business news provider Monitor that they take two to three days to unload goods, blaming the slow process on the port’s limited capacity.

“This is precisely one of the main reasons why the Albanian government has decided to invest in a new terminal in Porto Romano,” DPA said.

The new commercial port in the Porto Romano area, 6.3 km from Durres, will provide higher processing capacities, while linking to dry ports in Prishtina, capital of Kosovo, and Struga in North Macedonia, DPA director Pirro Vengu said earlier.
