Tirana, January 23, 2025 - The Bank of Albania has teamed up with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to bolster the country’s green finance initiatives and tackle climate challenges head-on.
At a signing ceremony today, Bank Governor Gent Sejko highlighted Albania’s drive to create a sustainable financial system. “We’re at the forefront of integrating green finance and building resilience to climate challenges,” he stated, referencing the nation’s 2023 Green Strategy as a blueprint for progress.
In 2024, the central bank conducted an in-depth review of how climate risks impact the banking sector, pinpointing vulnerable areas and launching a Climate Risk Management Guide. “These steps deepen our understanding of climate’s impact and set the stage for robust future solutions,” Sejko added.
Key to this transformation is Albania’s alignment with EU standards. Through the EIB’s Green Financial Systems Programme, the country will adopt a “green taxonomy” to classify sustainable activities, paving the way for eco-friendly investments.
Sejko praised the collaboration, saying, “This partnership is crucial for ensuring Albania not only overcomes challenges but seizes new opportunities for sustainable growth.”
