UNESCO warns Albania and North Macedonia: Ohrid at risk of World Heritage in Danger

July 17, 2024 — UNESCO has issued a warning to Albanian and Macedonian authorities, cautioning that Ohrid could be added to the List of World Heritage in Danger.

In its recent decision during the 46th session, UNESCO stressed the urgent need for comprehensive conservation efforts to safeguard Ohrid's unique cultural and natural heritage.

Both countries are required to submit a joint updated report by February 1, 2025, detailing the status of conservation measures and the implementation of UNESCO's recommendations.

The concern revolves around proposed urban developments and infrastructure projects near the lake, prompting UNESCO to call for robust environmental assessments and enhanced cross-border dialogue to protect Ohrid's universal values.
