Tropoja dance added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list

Dec 4, 2024 – Albania’s Tropoja dance, a lively tradition from the country’s northern region, has been officially added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The announcement came during the 19th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay. The Tropoja dance was praised for its unique rhythms, energetic steps, and the way it reflects Albania’s cultural identity.

The dance comes from Tropoja, a mountainous region in northern Albania, where it has been passed down through generations. It is more than just a performance—it tells the story of community, pride, and tradition. The movements are fast and expressive, accompanied by traditional music that brings the dance to life.

Albania’s Minister of Culture called the recognition a proud moment for the country. “The Tropoja dance is part of our soul, and now it is celebrated on a global stage,” the minister said.

This is not Albania’s first cultural treasure to be recognized by UNESCO. Other traditions, such as isopolyphonic singing, are already on the list. The aim of this recognition is to protect and share these traditions with future generations.
