Tirana, July 1, 2024 - Today, the world of literature mourns the loss of Albania’s literary giant, Ismail Kadare, who has passed away at the age of 88. Known for his profound impact on Albanian culture, Kadare’s death marks the end of an era in literature.
Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his sorrow upon hearing the news, describing Kadare as a monumental figure in Albanian culture who has now ascended to eternal recognition. “No words can truly capture this moment,” Rama said, recalling a message he had once written for Kadare’s birthday.
Reflecting on Kadare’s legacy, Rama noted how many have attempted to write about the celebrated author—crafting dissertations, articles, and even criticisms. Yet, he suggested, few will achieve the lasting impact of Kadare’s own work. The Prime Minister likened these efforts to sandcastles built by the sea, ephemeral and fleeting.
Rama expressed profound gratitude for Kadare’s contributions to the Albanian language and literature, acknowledging the author’s ability to bring stories to life with a magician’s touch and a meticulous eye. Kadare’s works have resonated worldwide, translated into dozens of languages, and have sparked both admiration and debate.
Rama also shared a personal anecdote, crediting Kadare for introducing him to the volcanic genius of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, a literary encounter he treasures deeply.
As the world bids farewell to Ismail Kadare, his legacy will undoubtedly endure, leaving an indelible mark on both Albanian culture and global literature.
