Ismail Kadare's rare manuscripts to be preserved in Albanian national

Tirana, August 22, 2024 — Rare manuscripts of Ismail Kadare, a titan of Albanian literature, have found a new home at Albania's General Directorate of Archives. Prime Minister Edi Rama announced this significant cultural milestone, revealing that Kadare's literary treasures will be preserved in a dedicated pavilion.

Kadare, whose works have shaped Albanian literature, will have his extensive collection—including unpublished manuscripts and idea sketches—kept in this special archive. This move aims to safeguard the legacy of a writer whose impact extends far beyond Albania's borders.

According to Rama, "The valuable collection of Ismail Kadare's literary works will be meticulously preserved, administered, and restored in a unique pavilion at the General Directorate of Archives. The writer's family has entrusted the complete collection, including manuscripts and unpublished drafts, for future generations to study and enjoy."

The decision to house Kadare’s archives in Albania follows a thoughtful process involving Kadare's family. His daughter, Gresa Kadare, noted the importance of this initiative. “It was not an easy decision,” she said. “Ismail had hesitated when approached by foreign institutions. He wanted the archive to return to Albania but wasn’t sure which institution to trust. I took it upon myself to fulfil his wish.”

Ardit Bido, General Director of Archives, reassured the public that Kadare’s manuscripts will be carefully managed. “These manuscripts will be preserved with the utmost dedication,” Bido stated. “This preservation effort is crucial for protecting our national literary heritage, following the tradition of receiving significant donations from figures like Lasgush Poradeci.”

The archive will include manuscripts of notable works such as “Spiritus,” “Darka e gabuar,” and “Hamleti,” among others. Additionally, typescripts of other works and personal notebooks from Kadare’s creative process will be included. The collection also features family photographs, cultural event albums, and a decree of citizenship from the Republic of Kosovo.
