When Princess Mary's husband, Crown Prince Frederik, ascends the Danish throne she will become Queen Consort.

Tasmanian-born Mary will be the first Australian to be crowned Queen, and she'll co-rule one of Europe's oldest monarchies.

But Mary isn't the first woman from Down Under to become a royal.

In the 1970s, a woman named Susan Cullen-Ward became Queen Susan when she married into one of Europe's royal families.

For much of her married life, she laid claim to the title, Queen Susan of the Albanians. However, it was never officially recognised by her newly-adopted country, Albania.

Cullen-Ward's husband, Leka Zog, was the pretender to the Albanian throne after his father was exiled from the eastern-European nation.

The couple's life was dominated by deportations and the search for a safe place to live, after years of upheaval throughout Europe.

Susan, who was originally from a country town in New South Wales, met her future husband at a dinner party in Sydney. The Albanian monarchy's website says they met in Egypt.
